Journalist

I’m a

interested in culture and research reporting.

ABOUT ME

The first time I dipped my toes into the pool of journalism was in the summer before my senior year of high school when I was given the opportunity to explore New York City’s music scene through the New York Times’ Summer program. The course I has been accepted into focused on reporting music in the Empire City. Throughout the two weeks of the program I attended indie concerts at hole-in-the-wall venues and learned how to translate melodies into a written report. After that, I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to journalism.

Throughout my college career, I was able to fulfill my dreams of being a music journalist through courses offered at UT as well as serving as a writer for Orange Magazine and SPARK Magazine. But, throughout my four years on the 40-acres I discovered the world of hard news reporting through my work at the Daily Texan, which is where I found my interest in science and research reporting. It all starts with an idea, and I am constantly scanning my surroundings and listening to what’s going on in my community to find a subject matter to write about that I know people will care about.

When entering the field of journalism, I had a strict purpose: to offer windows into worlds that the everyday person may be unfamiliar with and to tell exciting stories that could resonate with a widespread audience. Writing is a visual medium — your eyes take it in, and your imagination illustrates the events — and I aim to create a photo-realistic retelling of events with clarity and accuracy to capture an audience that may not have been interested or familiar with the subject matter and inform them about people and events in their community.

SPECIALITIES

  • I have done everything from album reviews to concert live shots and musician features. I have been lucky enough to be based in America’s live music capital, Austin, TX, and I have seized the opportunity to take in the town's robust music community and hope to be able to report more on all it has to offer.

  • It’s no secret that nowadays, most people receive their news from online platforms and social media. I have experience producing news stories in various beats, such as politics, science and research, published online. I know people need the news quickly and accessibly, so I strive to write accurate and concise stories that distill complicated information to be more easily digestible to the average American reader with quick turnaround times.

  • A publication’s website must be engaging and user-friendly so they are more likely to stick around to see what your publication offers. I was able to design a website for SPARK Magazine, for which I am the current senior web editor. That experience taught me many valuable lessons about website development, UX design and SEO content curation. Check out the site here! https://sparkmagazinetx.com/

  • Podcasting is the future of journalism. According to a 2023 study published by the Pew Research Center, 42% of Americans over 12 listen to podcasts as a news source. Additionally, 70% of Americans listen to podcasts of all genres. I am thankful that I have garnered experience in podcast production. All the steps of audio creation, from reporting to sourcing, recording, and editing, are skills I possess in my toolbelt. I strive to create audio stories that cover trends, people, and events in pop culture to offer insight into things that may seem mystifying to general audiences and help them gain a deeper understanding of the world through an immersive and engaging form of sensory storytelling.

  • All good writing is really just good editing. As a journalism student at the University of Texas at Austin and a news reporter for the Daily Texan, I have become close friends with AP style. I have become even more inseparable from it as an editor for SPARk Magazine. Nothing inspires me more than reading other writer's work and working with them to polish a piece to be the best it can be. I have skills in copyediting, specifically for AP style, that have made my writing proficiency and my capacity to help others stronger.
